KZN LIFESAVer, ANTON BERRY, AWARDED prestigious SPORTS AWARD

Lifesaver, Henry Antony Berry was acknowledged for his excellent contribution to Surf Lifesaving and presented with the special Lifetime Achievement Award at the glittering Premier’s Sport Awards 2006 function held at the ICC in Durban last night.  The Premier Sports Awards acknowledges the talent and achievements of outstanding sporting personalities in KwaZulu-Natal. Anton Berry was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his unstinting dedication to the Lifesaving movement and particularly his invaluable contribution in the instruction of Lifesaving.

Anton Berry, 68 years of age and a Member of Durban Surf Lifesaving Club has been involved in the lifesaving movement for 53 years. He started as a junior at the age of fifteen with Durban SLC. Anton is especially proud of his achievements in setting up the Lifesaving Club in Swakopmund in Namibia in 1997 and re-training the lifesavers there in resuscitation as well as representing Lifesaving South Africa in various International Conferences and International and Local Competition. He won Silver and Bronze in the World Lifesaving Champs held in Durban in 1996 in the Stillwater events, that of the 100m Dummy Rescue and 50m Towing Dummy, Masters Division.

Anton says that the Award wasn’t something he particularly worked for as he has always been involved in Lifesaving, but receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award has made him feel glad that that he is concluding his contribution to Lifesaving on a high note.  He is especially happy to promote the cause of Surf Lifesaving and will continue to do so as it is an important part of his life. ‘Surf Lifesavers never die, we just go rusty.’ says Anton Berry humorously. This stalwart of Lifesaving is a real inspiration to everyone in the Lifesaving movement and Lifesaving South Africa congratulates him for his great achievement and continued support and involvement in Lifesaving in KwaZulu-Natal.
